    Story

Masters from other worlds who visit Latecia do not always become acclimated to life here. Some become so overcome by a yearning for home that they choose to commit the unspeakable, an act from which they cannot return. I've heard a number of stories about such masters. Do they believe that if their lives end here, they return to their lives from before? That after a pleasant adventure, they can return to what they call "reality", to the moment they fell asleep on their beds before coming here? The truth is that they don't go back. They only end up leaving their cold, lifeless body here in Latecia. Sometimes, my master says she's nothing more than an unwelcome stranger here, someone forever on the outside looking in. I always tell her that if she wants change, she should start by changing out of that tacky plaid shirt, and take off that rainbow bracelet and huge watch that went out of style so long ago! She'll then always get a distressed look on her face and protest, saying that her style wouldn't stand out back at home, and that she prides herself on her fashion. As if that matters to me. I just want my master to dress normally, in something that matches her nice looks. Come to think of it, the clothes worn by our Mona tribe back at the Pagos Coast would really look good on her. I'm going to make her try them on.

    Story

"Master, don't you ever want to go back to your world?" "Why would you think that?" "I mean, everyone you love is back there, right? You were basically kidnapped and brought here. I'm sure back home you've got parents... maybe a cat..." "Hm... I guess to them, I just went missing, disappeared without a trace. They might even think I committed suicide, like I disappeared into the ocean or something." "Why would you say something like that? That makes me hurt just to hear. Please don't think things like that." "I was just joking. I heard there's a huge difference between how time passes here and in the 'real' world. I bet I could spend a few years here and it'd only be a few hours over there." "...So you think your home is the 'real' world." "Sorry. To you, I guess this is the real world... "Honestly, I don't really want to go back. The people I love... Well, they're not in that world anymore."

    Story

Suddenly, I started to wonder about who my master was talking about. Had her loved ones all died? Is that why she didn't want to go back? The light in her eyes seems to have grown darker as of late. I heard many masters who come from other worlds eventually are overcome by such a strong nostalgia for their homes that they go crazy. Maybe that's why she sometimes hints at being depressed... is what I thought, but then she said she didn't really want to go back home, so then why would she think of herself as an outsider always looking in? Her sadness is eating away at her life. I've always been able to defeat our enemies with this coral sword, but how am I suppose to defeat her sadness? I was completely at a loss for how to fight against such a vile, incorporeal villain. ... Master asked me to come watch the waves on the beach with her tonight. With the cool breeze on my cheeks, the evening starlight and city lights bouncing off the water, and Master's voice talking about who-knows-what, it was like all of my senses were being tickled. I'd never seen the night ocean shine so beautifully. The single guardrail without any sort of fence for safety was a bit dangerous, though.

    Story

"Monarch, do you think all the creatures that live underwater look up at the water's surface in the same way we look at the stars in the sky? Do they lay on the seabed and watch all the lights flicker and bleed together?" "I don't really understand, Master." "It's really sad that there's no place for me in the world of the people that I love." "...You've got me, though, right?" She only gave a faint smile in response. She laughed, but it looked like she was crying. I had never seen her cry in the 3 years that she had been my master. Not a single time. She whispered to me to close my eyes. I felt her chilly fingers touch my cheek. I slowly closed my eyes. The cold night sky that had taken my breath away and the bright city lights embroidered the ocean's surface. Maybe she didn't know how to let herself cry. Maybe that's why she smiled so sorrowfully.

    Story

When I came to my senses, she had already thrown herself into the ocean and disappeared. My blood froze. I couldn't tell if what I was feeling was sadness or betrayal. I immediately followed her by jumping down into the water. Did she forget I was raised on the beach? I reached out my hand and caused glowing coral to grow. In almost an instant, the pitch-dark water was alight with coral, and I was able to easily find her and take her up to land. As I watched my master throw up the ocean water she'd swallowed, something warm kept trickling down my cheeks—whether it was tears or seawater, I couldn't be sure. Eventually, she started to laugh like a small child. "When those stars on your head were glowing beneath the water, I felt like I was looking up into space." I didn't say anything. I realized I might never be able to really understand her. All that I could do was to quietly stay by her side for as long as she was alive, like the starlight that keeps the ocean company. There may come a time when she leaves me, when the night ocean and the night sky merge into one. It's really sad that there's no place for me in the world of the person that I love, Master.
