However, its gaze was not fixed upon its master, but rather on me. Its eyes were like a bottomless abyss. Thinking on the relationship between a master and their Astromon, or between a guardian and their pet Astromon reminded me of a horror story I heard long ago. It was about these animals who lived off the life force of their owners. The owners never doubted their pets, and in the end became empty husks. The pets, once they confirmed their owners' life force was completely gone, moved on the next day to find another victim...

Story
A sense of unease flashed through my mind for a moment. The sudden change to her personality over the last year, her strange, inexplicable rise from being a no-name author... It all happened after she brought home her Cotteen. She said petting the Cotteen helped increase her brain activity, but what if the Cotteen actually somehow changed her brain...? I decided to cautiously throw the idea out there as a joke. "You're not like, being controlled by the Cotteen or anything, right? Ha ha." Suddenly, she stopped petting the Cotteen like her hand had been frozen and her eyes flickered with an eerie glow. In the five years I'd known her, I'd never seen her look like this. She opened her mouth to say something. I don't remember well what happened next. I became scared and ran outside the building, right into the pouring rain without an umbrella. I reached my house drenched from the rain, my face wet from water or tears or both. Was I in my right mind? Were she and I really friends? Nothing seemed certain anymore, save for one thing: the person I thought I knew was no longer anywhere to be found.
